Creating Seamless Transitions in Hair Color
SHADOWING
A shadow is a glazing technique used to create a seamless transition between a client’s base color and their balayage or foil highlights, resulting in a natural, organic look. This technique is applied after highlights have been rinsed and towel-dried, using either a bowl and brush or a bottle, depending on the stylist’s preference. Sectioning is crucial for precise application, as the shadow is placed where the base color meets the highlights to ensure smooth blending and avoid harsh lines. A gradient effect is achieved by gradually reducing the depth of the shadow towards the top and front, creating a harmonious flow from dark to light. Shadows are especially useful for balancing previous color and addressing uneven lift, and timing is essential to prevent over-darkening during processing. Typically, the shadow formula is a level lighter than the base but darker than the highlight, with adjustments made to ensure the desired tone and blend.
